NICD

Research

Research at the NICD is either technology development
driven or interventions driven. The aim of research
carried out by the NICD is to address questions relating
to the detection of micro-organisms as well as the
detection of factors governing transmissibility, virulence,
ecology, epidemic behaviour and distribution.

Diagnostic Service

Some of our units provide clinical diagnosis and
molecular surveillance. The laboratories aim to provide
rapid and accurate diagnostic tests for patient
management and research purposes as well as critical
surveillance information. For the African continent, the
NICD provides a much needed laboratory and
institutional resource.

The Outbreak Response team supports all nine provinces
in South Africa with outbreak control of epidemic prone
infectious diseases.
